A significant concern for parents is the productivity of their children. Are they ready for the next school year? Are they doing their best? Parents can do a few things that will assist their child’s academic success both now, and in the future.  You want to offer your child the best chance to excel. 9 tips for increasing the productivity of your children.

Sleep is essential for everyone, especially kids. Having an adequate sleep is critical for a child’s mental and physical development. Rest will also help focus in the classroom, as a lack of sleep directly impacts brain function. If a child is tired, performance and productivity drops and they will ultimately suffer. One important tip for establishing a good sleep habit is to have a set bedtime each night. Make this bedtime non-negotiable apart from special occasions. Take your children’s eyes away from media and screens at least one hour before they go to bed. Light from the screens stimulates the mind and can keep the brain awake.

Technology and media are very available for children these days. Limiting media use is necessary for maintaining the health of your child. Although there are situations where a computer or tablet can be very helpful and educational for your child, there is a time when overuse can occur. Putting limitations on media use is wise. Why? A restriction will reduce the risk of attention and focus problems, symptoms of depression and anxiety, and even risk of obesity.

When you combine media and entertainment such as television, computers, phones, tablets and gaming consoles, there is a lot of use during one day. Cutting it down to a total of 2-3 hours a day is optimal.  Avoid letting your child have a television or computer in their bedroom. You can set a good example by limiting your own use where possible.

Structure and routine are essential for children. Having a schedule is critical for developing self-discipline and increasing productivity as they grow. Like a school would, you need to create a schedule that will help them succeed. Have a time that they wake up, eat breakfast, do homework, read a book, have free time, get ready for bed and so forth.

4. Teach Organisation Skills

Organisation skills are something they will keep throughout their lives. Developing organization skills at an early age will have them a step ahead. By the time they reach higher education, where the organization is imperative to success, they will be comfortable and ready. Teach them to have a clean room and work environment. If your child doesn’t have homework one evening, ensure they use this time to read a book or read ahead in class. Ensure they don’t waste time watching TV or playing games. Making time for this now will set up good habits for the future.

6. Getting Enough Exercise

Children with obesity are at an all-time high. It’s up to the parents to get their children moving. Not getting a sufficient amount of physical activity will hinder the child’s health in the present and future. Exercise has a lot of apparent benefits including healthy bones, joints, muscles and coordination. However, it offers some more benefits such as improving the quality and quantity of sleep and reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety.  It’s also suggested that exercise does improve academic performance.  A child that has expended some energy during the day will be able to sit and focus for more extended periods of time.  Getting your child involved in exercise is simple. So, what about the rest of the day? When children are at school, pack them healthy and nutritious lunches. Many schools don’t offer healthy options for children to buy, so packing something good is critical.

The best way to monitor your children’s eating is by cooking the food they eat. Going out each night and eating at restaurants will make it more difficult to monitor. You will also have more control over portions. If you don’t have time each night to cook food, meal prep on a Sunday for the week ahead. Always keep some healthy snack options around the house as well.

9. Relationship with The Teachers

To development and obtain an understanding of your child’s academic performance and overall productivity, create a positive relationship with their teachers. Always attend parent/teacher nights and stay up to date on your child’s strengths, and more importantly their weaknesses.
