According to pediatricians, it is ideal to wait until your baby reaches six months to start introducing solid foods. However, this will actually depend on your baby’s development and readiness to eat solid foods. In fact, it is possible to start as soon as your baby reaches four months old.

The ideal signs that may tell that your baby is ready to eat his or her first solid foods include being able to sit upright, hold their head up, and show signs if interest in eating solid foods.  

Considerations to Make Before Introducing Solids Foods

There are few things to keep in mind if you are introducing solid foods to your baby. First, you have to note that first-time eaters only need about two tablespoons of food. Thus, you have to keep portions small at first.

Also, you should watch out for allergies, especially if you are introducing foods that contain common allergens. Try out one flavour or type of food at a time and observe whether your child will start to develop allergy symptoms.

Since there are certain foods that can cause gas and make your baby uncomfortable, you should be mindful when you give your child these foods. Foods like beans, wheat, dairy, onions and cruciferous vegetables have the tendency to cause gas.

You should also consider going organic. If you are already giving your child organic formula for the baby, you should consider giving organic foods when possible. You can try giving your child apples, peaches, strawberries, spinach, celery, and potatoes.

During the first six months, you should go for simple and one ingredient purees. Since you are introducing one type of food at a time, it will be easier for you to identify a food allergy.

Once your child is able to tolerate this type of foods, you can try combining or adding in other flavours. Here are some simple recipes that you can make for your baby:

  • Banana Puree. One of the best puree baby food recipes is the banana puree. Banana is rich in fibre and potassium. In addition, this fruit is also gentle on the stomach. Using the back of the spoon, you can simply mash a ripe banana until it becomes smooth.
  • Sweet Potato Puree. In a pot, you have to boil finely diced sweet potato for about 15 minutes or until it reaches your desired consistency. You can mash the sweet potato using the back of the spoon. You may not even use a food processor.
  • Carrot Puree. Carrots are rich in vitamin A and beta-carotene, which is an antioxidant. To make this recipe, you have to peel and slice as many carrots as you want and steam for about 25 minutes or until they become tender. Add a small amount of water and puree it using a baby food processor. You can store the leftovers in the freezer.
  • Pea Puree. Peas are good sources of vitamins A and C, protein, calcium and iron. Frozen peas should be thawed for about two minutes before placing them in a blender or food processor. You have to add in about two tablespoons of water and puree the peas for about two minutes.
  • Apple Puree. To make this recipe, you simply have to peel and cut the apples into small parts. In a pot, you have to bring the apples to boil until they are fairly soft before placing them in a food processor.

These are only the simple recipes that you can try. When your baby is able to tolerate the single ingredient baby foods, you can slowly introduce new flavours through combining different types of food. For instance, you can try combining beets and blueberry, pumpkin and thyme, and even a combination of various vegetables.
