Being a mother is the most difficult but at the same time also the most satisfying job in the world. I try very hard to be a dedicated mother, to provide my child with everything, and to teach him how to be a good person.

It is not always easy, I admit that there are times when I feel like I’m carrying a lot my back, but it is all worth it when my son hugs me and tells me that he loves me. I remember one time when he was so happy that his eyes were shining and he couldn’t take the smile off his pretty face. It was his 10th birthday and I did my best to make it as special as it could possibly be.

A family story - my son's birthday party

Making lists

In case you have never organized kids birthday party before, you wouldn’t believe just how many things it takes to make it ‘work’. There are party accessories such as confetti, party hats and whistles, food for both children and adults (mind you, there it had to be something that would not make a mess out of my carpet) and entertainment. My advice is to make a list of everything you are going to need – from plastic cups and plates to new tablecloths. You will be prepared and stressed less.

Planning ahead

Weeks before the party I realized that there are going to be a lot of guests and I couldn’t allow them to be bored, so I started planning in advance. Previous years have been pretty much calm and we had small parties with family members and a few neighbours. However, that year he wanted to have all his friends from school over, so organizing it at home was out of the question. I booked a kids birthday party venue instead and it was a great choice.

Jumping show

All of them were happy and healthy kids who just love running around and having fun. This is why I organized them into groups and had them work on their trampoline jumps. We had trampolines there and I had them work on their most awesome jumps and flips they ever thought of. They ‘practiced’ and warmed up for a while and we had a real competition with judges and spectators. They loved it, they couldn’t stop laughing and goofing around while they were showing off with their best moves. I laughed until there were tears in my eyes.

Luckily, the venue had great food to offer so we settled with some good old pizza, sandwiches and fruit. When we had our parties at home I used to improvise with their food, making sandwich caterpillars and watermelon stars and whatnot, and I was afraid that my son would miss all those things now. However, it turned out he didn’t even notice the difference, he was so absorbed in being the star of the day.

In years to come, I will always remember our ride home and the look on his face as he talked about all the fun he had that day and how much he enjoyed having all his friends with him. Much to my surprise, I also managed to have fun without thinking a lot about my furniture, backyard and whether they spilled juice on our dog.
